Research seminar by Prof. Subramanian R Iyer
IIM K hosted its Ninth research seminar on January 16, 2025, for the year 2024-25. It was conducted by Prof. Subramanian R Iyer, Associate Professor of Finance at the University of New Mexico, USA.
The topic was JOBS Act 2012: Employment, Investment Growth, and Capital Formation
Abstract of the talk given below
The JOBS Act of 2012 was a major financial market deregulation. Regulations were relaxed to encourage small firms to issue IPOs sooner and acquire capital, leading to job creation and higher investments. A decade after the major deregulation, I examine whether the JOBS Act of 2012 and the Emerging Growth Company (EGC) provisions created jobs, increased investments, and improved access to capital. I find that EGC firms succeeded. The percentage of EGC firms that listed their shares on major exchanges was better. We advise policymakers to relax EGC provisions further to enable small businesses to be the beacons of economic progress.
