Research seminar by Prof. Mridul Kumar Saggar

IIM K hosted its fifth research seminar on December 17, 2025, for the year 2025-26. It was conducted by Prof. Mridul Kumar Saggar, Professor of Practice, Economics, IIM Kozhikode.

The topic was Are we in the Goldilocks Scenario

Abstract of the talk given below

This talk will examine whether the current characterization of the Indian economy as being in a “Goldilocks” phase—marked by strong growth and benign inflation and how far it stands up to closer scrutiny. Drawing upon the recent macroeconomic data, the talk will delve into methods & quality of national accounts asking the question whether this combination reflects genuine macroeconomic balance or masks underlying issues and how macroeconomic policies – monetary and fiscal – respond to this. An assessment of the current state of global and Indian financial markets will also be provided with stock market overvaluation and rupee- dollar exchange rate falling below the 90 mark. Discussions at the talk will encompass asset price cycle, including the cryptos and the possible ramifications of weakening financial regulations and the global economic headwinds arising in this backdrop amid slack in domestic private investment and productivity. Overall, the talk will offer a nuanced framework for understanding growth-inflation and macro-financial trade-offs and the strategic relevance of macroeconomic narratives for real-world business decisions.
