To help us monitoring<br \/>\nthe severity of economic problems, Arthur Okun constructed the so-called \u201cmisery index\u201d, a<br \/>\nsum of inflation rate and unemployment rate. Thailand is often regarded as the least<br \/>\nmiserable country in the world, thanks to its extremely low unemployment rate and low<br \/>\ninflation rate. In this seminar, I will discuss about the misery index of Thailand and its<br \/>\ndevelopment in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The inverse relationship between inflation rate and unemployment rate is a cornerstone of<br \/>\nmodern macroeconomic theory. It in effect places limitation to public policies aimed to<br \/>\ncurb the misery index. I will share my thoughts on the effectiveness of Bank of Thailand\u2019s<br \/>\npolicies over the past decades.<\/p>\n<p>Fighting inflation and unemployment has implications on economic development in<br \/>\nThailand, in particular, poverty reduction and income distribution.
